April 1863

Sunday 12th   Wind S W Clear & mild. Maria started to go to
Belle Farm by the way of Mr Bryan’s but could not
get a Boat and had to return. I staid at house

Monday 13   Wind W Clear. Twenty five of my Negroes went
to the Yankees last night. Those who remained
did nothing but to remove the things left by them
I believe now they will all go except the very old
and decrepid.

Tuesday 14   Wind SE Clear. Joshua ploughing with oxen.
Opening drains in Oats Sent Nick to Stubbs Mill
for Flour Richard went to school, could get no Flour
& I have not a quart in the house. The Yankees burt
Coleman Robins & the White Marsh Mill Sunday night, & say
they intend to burnt every Mill in the County. There is a
large fire in the direction of A W Robin’s Mill to night
Of course they expect & probably will starve out the County
Our Cavalry I understand left the Count Sunday.
There was evidently a battle today, somewhere in the direction of
Suffolk or Blackwater. The firing was very heavy and I heard
if from about 1 or 2 o Clk till almost night.
