May 1862

Thursday 22
Wind SW. Clear in mg Thunder cloud in Evg and rain
Weeding Corn. Taking dirt with three ploughs.
I was at home all day, saw not on, and heard nothing

Friday 23
wind SW Clear. Weeding Corn, taking dirt with 3 ploughs.
I went to the CH hoping to get a Mail with late
papers, but got none later than 13th. This suspense is terrible
I saw a No of the N.Y. Herald of 20th. they admit
that three of their Gun Boats out of four were bady disabled at Warwicks bend
on James River & the Monitor alone escaped without serious
injury. I think if they cant ascend James River they
wont reach Richmond. The Herald says the distruction
of their Iron clad Gun boats is the most serious blow to them
yet. They thought they were invulnerable.
It is confidently reported that France & England will shortly interpose
to bring about a peace.

Saturday 24
Wind NE. Cloudy and rained from 11 O,clk till night
Weeding Corn Taking dirt with three ploughs in m.g.
Shelled Corn & got some wood in Evg. Began to shear
Sheep but was stopped by the cold rain. No mail recvd &
have heard nothing.
