April 1862

Sunday 6
fighting at Lees Mill about five miles below it. Six of our
wounded were brought to the Hospital in York 3 Louisiannians
and 3 Gorgians One of our men killed yesterday. We took about 80 prisoners yesterday.
The Yankees sent up a Balloon below York three times to,day
They are said to be landing heavy reinforcements & a large quantity
of stores &c on Back Creek & Pocosin River. They will probably attack
in force To,morrow. I dont know Genl Magruders force but hear he
is confident and the troops in fine spirits.

Monday 7
Wind NE Cloudy and cold. Rained after 2 O clk
Ploughing three Ploughs. Hauling manure on Potatoe
patch. throwing up bank around garden
I am too sick with an ulcerated throat and bad cold
to go to Gloster Point to,day. There was some heavy
firing at intervals but the wind was adverse & could not hear
very distinctly. I trust we have maintained our lines intact.
Our poor soldiers must be suffering terribly if they are
still kept at the trenches in this horrible weather
There is one consolation, the Yankees must suffer too, and their
general attack must be delayed, which gives us time to
get the reinforcements we want. Charley & the baby very sick.
