May 1861

Wednesday 1st
Wind NW a perfect huricane Clear & cold. Planting Corn.

Friday 3
Wind S. Clear. It has been blowing half a gale for
the past 4 or 5 days. Planting Corn.
Nothing new. It is reported that 12,500 Northern Troops
have landed at Annapolis & are passing on to Washington
& that Lincoln had in Washington on the 27th [hltd?] about 20,000
Federal Troops, Nearly all Yankee Volunteers. It is
also reported that there are near Alexandria & En Route
to that place upwards of Twenty Thousand Southern Troops.
A “Reign of Terror” exists at the North. Every Man who wont
denounce the South & if rich subscribe money for its subjugation
is in danger of his life & having his property destroyed.
