Monday 22nd
Wind W Clear. Broke up land to plant Peas Thinned Corn. I borrowed Deal’s horse & carried Mary booth and Barney home in Evg. Genl Lees Army has gone to Maryland & Pennsylvania in force. They took Chambersburg Pa. last Monday & the NY Herald said were advancing on Harrisburg. Ewell is said to have taken Maryland Heights which commands Harpers Ferry. The Panic is described as very great in Washington & the whole North. Lincoln has issued a proclamation calling out 120,000 Militia for defence Hookers Army has retreated precipitately to Washington for its defence. Major Sinclair got from Richmond last Evg. He met some Yankee Cavalry from Gloster Point in King & Queen Friday, he escaped but lost his horse & Buggy & letters & other things he was bringing from Richmond. The Yankees returned to Gloster Point yesterday carrying with them Thirty of Stephen Field’s Negroes, all of T Armsteads and a good many belonging to other persons & a large number of Horses, Mules & Cattle & some Carriages, &c. plundered from the people of Gloster & King & Queen.
