<html>A tough time indeed for the past
two months and a half.
Quite tough to go thru such a
siege. tho when consented to an
operation was willing for any
means to be undertaken for re-
lief.  Suffered very much for the
first week but able to be held
up in bed the 12" p.o. day and
doing fine when too much pres-
sure used in irrigating cavity
caused agonizing pain & collapse
which caused a great lot of
suffering and a back-set of
about 3 weeks, recovering very
slowly.  Latter part of Mch. a
double Pneumonia developed
which caused much pain and
suffering - terminating by [?]
Adhesions causing much dis-
comfort & still unable to sleep
more than 3 hrs. at a time.
Hoping for improvement by
removal to warmer climate.
                            MAY - 1918
1-7 Improving gradually in Base
Hospital #9 A.P. O. 738, Chateauroux.
Especially sleep - able now to do 4 or 5
hrs. without waking.  Out of hospital
for first time since Feby. 11" on 6th
when went into town 1.45 returning
at 7.30, standing trip well & did lot
of walking.  The cleanest city I have
seen in France.  Weather fairly warm
but not as much sunshine as I hoped
for.
8_15 Very little improvement in weath-
er conditions.  Sunshine a rarity.
Sleeping somewhat better & pain
in back practically gone tho
muscular spasms about side
wound continue to make much
discomfort. In Chateauroux again
[10S?] Letter from Ditty 11" - the first
for a month, date of 3/28.
