the 21st No. Ca. & 1st Md were ordered to advance
through the town. Taking a cross-road we struck the
Martinsburg road five miles from Winchester, & here all
were halted & ordered to encamp, except Steuart with the Cavy, the
1st Md Regt & Balto Arty. Just after the fog cleared
away, Col Crutchfield came from Gen Jackson (having
left him an hour previous) with orders to go back by
Newtown (7 miles off) & crossing over to the Valley Pike
at that point, to come up it, as the enemy were being
reinforced at Strasburg. This most extraordinary order
shows that Gen Jackson had no idea of finding us ac-
tually engaged at Winchester & effectually answers the
absurd calumny that Jackson would have captured
the whole of Banks Army at Winchester, had Ewell come
come up as soon as ordered. In fact Col Crutchfield
told Gen Ewell in my hearing that he had been told
to look for him four or five miles from Winchester on
the Front Royal road. Barbour places our halting
on the 24th at 10 miles from Winchester & the rect of
the orders from Jackson to move on, as I do. He puts
the opening of the fight at 5.20 A.M. & the first dis-
covery of Jackson's approach at 7. _ the termination
of the action about 8. o clock.
