Col Mercer soon drove them off however, by an attack
in flank. The enemys Artillery having opened on our
Infantry from a hill to the West of the town, Capt's
Courtney's & Brockenborough's Batteries (the former under
Lt. J. W. Latimer) were put in position on the right of the
road on top of a high hill, & opened an enfilading fire
with great effect. After half an hour fighting or more, a
think fog came up & with unusual rapidity spread over
the whole town & valley, stopping all firing & shutting
out every object more than two hundred yards distant.
When this fog lifted, half an hour or three quarters
later, we saw the head of Jacksons Column advancing
down the Turn Pike & recommenced our fire to direct
attention from them. Some of his Officers who ought to
have know better, claimed to have commenced the
fight at Winchester, but so far is this from being correct
that it was by the watch rather over an hour from the
time of our first opening, to the time where they first
became engaged with artillery or small arms. They did
not come up till the fog was lifting, when the 21st Ga
had already aided the 21st No. Ca. to drive out the Yankee
left from their first position, & the 1st Md had entered
the town without opposition. Just after they come up, the
enemy set fire to the R Rd depot & stores, & commenced
