Sunday 17
Wind NE Cloudy & cool. We staid at home till Ev.g when
we rode to Mr Selden’s. they got home from Richmond a
few days since and brought Bob with them, he looks dreadfully.
I did not see Mrs Selden but Maria says she looks very badly and
is greatly distressed at poor Lewis’s death.
Monday 18
Wind NE Clear. Stacked Oats straw, Harrowed &
chopped Turnip patch, Put up the frame of a straw house.
I got Richmond papers of 16th Inst by K Sinclair sent by
Warner. He reached home this morning
Tuesday 19
Wind NE Clear. Planted Turnips. Made straw house
and put wheat chaff away in it. Sent three hands Joshua
Wm & Alick to assist in threshing Sister Anns Wheat.
I went to Guinea there heard that the Yankees were
again landing a large number of troops at Yorktown
supposed to be a part of McClellan’s forces from James River
which position he is said to be evacuating. I cant concieve
what object they can have in coming to York Town unless it is
to steal all the balance of the Negroes here and to Forage upon us
and devastate and destroy all our property. For they cant
intend are “On To Richmond” via York River again after having failed
by that route so signally before.
