Monday 1st
Wind SW Cloudy & Rained Early in Mg & late in Ev.g.
Hauled some Rails fro Templeman. Hauled out & scattered Manure.
Cleaning out ditches. I went to Mrs Carney’s to carry 50 lbs yarn
& 22 1/2 lbs Cotton to weave into cloth for Negroes. Came by the C.H.
(Court day) Plenty of rumors there to the effect that Popes
Army had been annihilated by Lee & Jackson and Pope taken
& nearly all his officers killed wounded or Taken Prisoners
but they are nothing but rumors brought from Richmond
and tho I hope they are true, yet do not put implied faith in them.
I hope we shall hear the truth in a few days.
Tuesday 2
Wind N Clear & cool. Hauling out & scattering Manure
Cleaning out ditches. I went to Belle Fame by Water
with [Jas?] Sinclair & his Father for them to buy Beef Cattle
from Mrs Taylor. They bought sever of her.
Wednesday 3
Wind N Clear. Began to pull Fodder. Maria carried
the children to the Ct house to the Dentist (Dr Coulling) to have
some of their Teeth extracted. The Papers contain a Telegraphic dispatch from
Genl Lee stating we had gained a “Signal victory’ over the
combined forces of Pope & McClellan on the historic plain
of Manassas.
