Saturday 6th

We have also gained a great Victory at Richmond Kentucky
Our Troops commanded by Genl Kirby Smith & the Federals by the
Notorious “Bull Nelson. Bragg is also said to be driving
Buells army before him with every prospect of catching and
crushing it before it can reach the Ohio River.
We truly have cause to be thankful to God and our brave
men for all these victories. If they are followed up rapidly
by continued successes I have strong hopes that a Peace will
speedily be conquored.

Sunday 7

Wind SE Clear. I rode to Mr Sinclairs in m.g. Fayette went to Richmond
to join the Army again. He has recovered his health.

Monday 8

Wind SE Clear in m.g A thunder cloud about 12 O.clk but no rain
here. Clear in Ev.g. Pulling & shucking Fodder.
Sent 5 wethers 1 Ram & 1 Lamb to Mr Curtis in Ox Cart. Got some
Ginned Cotton from him & a Kettle & Pot from Mr Bryan’s to boil
Salt in, which I intend to do so son as I finished the Fodder.
I went to Guinea to see how they make the furnaces to boil salt &
to learn their process of salt boiling. Got a Baltimore paper of the 3rd
The Federal Army was then at Munsons Hill very near Washington & were
going to ensconce themselves behind the works there. They have been badly
beaten & our Troops were in persuit.

Tuesday 9

Wind SW Clear. Pulling & shucking Fodder
Maria went to Mrs Tabbs funeral at White Marsh,
She died at Elinington Saturday night.

Wednesday 10

Wind E Cloudy & showery during the day.
Packing away some Fodder up the Barn loft
I went to Ct house. (Mail day) The entire Federal
Army has taken refuge behind their defences around
Washington. Four of our Army Corps – Jacksons,
Longstreets, AP Hills, & DH Hills have crossed the
Potomac near Leesburg and were in Montgomery County Maryland
the 7th Inst. – Kerby Smiths & Humphrey Marshalls forces
were only Twelve Miles from Cincinnati & great Panic
prevailed there, & in western Virginia our Forces are said to be advan=
=cing in the Kananha valley to have taken Clarksburg in Harrison County
& have possession of the Rail Road there.

Thursday 11

Wind E Rained at intervals during the day. Removed Corn
from one home into another. Cut Tops in Ev.g The Yankees
had [Sixy?] Generals killed in the Battles at & around Manassas
Kearney, Stevens, Taylor, Buford, Hatch & Bohlem & Patrick . Tower
has his leg shot off and others wounded. Our loss in all the Battles
not more than 1800 to 2000. The Yankee loss about 30,000.
