June 1861

[Wedne]sday 5th
Wind SE. cloudy & misty all day. Throwing dirt to
Corn with four Ploughs. Thinning Corn.
I went to York Town To.day. There are about
Six Thousand Troops there and they are hourly
arriving, an engagement may be considered as certain
to occur within a few days. Heard of many collisions
between scouting parties. I think few if any strictly
true, & most of them without foundation in fact -
They are all reported as favorable to the South
which I trust is the case. A promising young Officer
of ours a Capt [Mann?] of the Rifles is reported to have
been killed in a skirmish at Fairfax Court House.

Thursday 6
Wind E Rained at intervals during the day.
Throwing dirt to Corn with four ploughs.
Thinning Corn. Sister Ann & Betty Goggin & infant
have arrived at Wilsons Creek from Memphis

Friday 7
Wind NE Cloudy & cold. Throwing dirt to Corn &
Thinning it. Sat out sweet Potatoe slips

Saturday 8
Wind NE Cloudy in m.g. Clear afterwards. Finished throwing
first furrows to Corn. Hilling Corn.
