Does my precious Sadie wonder what
has become of her "Ma Cinty?" Well, my little daughter,
when I got to Richmond I found Dr.
Coleman was sick, and I though my staying
with him would make him well faster than if
I were to go off and leave him, and now he has
gotten better I cannot hear of any way to get back
to Gloucester. I am very anxious to go to you, &
feel your little loving arms around my neck
and get some of your sweet kisses. I hope, you
have been a good girl and have not given your
Aunt Mattie much trouble, you must mind
every thing she says to you, and love her dearly.
I want you always to love her, even after you
get to be a great big girl, and you can go to her
and tell he any thing that troubles you, and
she will listen to you, and always be kind
and loving to little Sadie. I hope, before very
long to go down to Wilson's Creek, and then if
the miserable Yankees are still in
Williamsburg, I will bring you up to Richmond.

but, I hope, to hear soon that they have run off
from Williamsburg, and then we can go back
to poor "Ma Tucker," she is there all by herself
now, with only Brother Monty, [?] [?]
has [been?] away and left her but Mamy Patty
is there, and she will stay with her. I expect
"Ma Tucker" misses her little Sadie and often
wishes for her. Has Aunt Mattie told you
how we have shipped the Yankees up here. We
have made them run so fast and for that
we do not know where they are. Ain't that
splendid? I hope, the good Lord will send
them out of Virginia before long. I have seen
your Brother Tommy, Uncle Saintly, Sister
Bland & Sis [Gether?]; and they all asked
about you. Brother Tom & Sister Bland
are crazy to see you. Sister Bland has
been up to see Aunty [Berkeley?] and [l...ty?] Bev,
& Cint & Frank, she is going back again on
Monday, and I expect Brother will go with her,
she is not well & looks very badly. I got a letter
from Miss Helen and she says she loves you
very much. What have you been doing, playing
all the time, or have you said some lessons?

[3]

Ask Aunt Mattie not ot let you forget how
to read.

I got you a piece of cashmere to make
you a walking dress, but it cost a heap of
money and you must take good care of
it. Do you go to see Mrs. Sheldon every day
and mind all she has to say to you? Give
my love to her & Mr Sheldon, and Mr &
Mrs Curtis, Miss Holly, [?] Brother &
Fanny. You must not wrong Fanny.
Write to me soon.

May God bless you my precious child
and keep you safe and well for your
devoted Mother.

Don't let anybody but Aunt Mattie read
my letter. Ask her to get you some shoes,
at any price of any sort, even those very light
ones at Hickory Fork, and me some tooth
brushes. Brush your teeth every day. Dr.
Coleman say you must not[underscored] take any more
Alum unless your throat is sore, but take five
drips of tincture of iron twice a day. There is
some in my trunk.
