piece, to Front Royal. They deserve great credit

with the two Regts of Cavy were sent to New Town by
your orders, where he captured a number of waggon
& ambulances, & several hundred prisoners. He was re-

I came in sight of the town a little after four a.m.

hidden by the mist & fences, I sent forward the 21st N.C.
under Col Kirkland, supported by the 21st Ga. Col
Mercer. Those Regt went forward in the most gallant
style & were soon engaged with the enemy, while the
Courtney Arty opened with vigor & effect under 1st
Lt Latimer. The 1st Md Regt Col Bradley T. Johnson
was detached to the left (South.)
