My dear friends, I suppose you are all aware of the existence of an act of Congress condemning persons who hold correspondence with the Confederates in imprisonment for no shorter time than 6 months nor longer than 5 years and a very heavy fine in addition. The only drawback that I can see is that there may be some chance of the funds in question being taken by rebels on the high seas, privateers and such like. This is my own thought and no other person's. The present month is thought the best to make the trip. Another firm friend thinks it is well to make a trip to Europe or Canada. I hope this is made plain. It is most difficult to write bound up as I am. For the sake of others I must run the risk of being thought a fool. The reception of a certain check was indicated two months before it was received. I do not know the result of the application for cashing it. I will do what I can for you all. This you may rely on. But common prudence must actuate you all which does not seem to have much effect on your conduct now or at least on some of the parties. Be aware that what can be done for you all will be done unless you frustrate the efforts of true friends by your own petulance. This is a hard word, but I can think of not others except impudence. Do any two wish to come to the United States? The Border States are strongly advised against. Philadelphia is thought to be the most desirable place, but whatever the thoughts may be, [quiet?] of speech and action is absolutely necessary in such a move for your own sakes. No one can help you if are not under strong self control. No matter under what contingencies of provocation silence and inaction are absolutely necessary to get along if you wish to reach any advantage by coming over. Do not think I mean to offend. I speak only of the necessities of the case. You have a good and sincere friend in the person who has always acted as your friend. Of course, you know he does not reside any where near your former abode but you can guess whom I mean. He will use his influence for you. You must know who I mean. Some one you have known nearly all your life. A bill passed Congress last week for collecting and selling aban doned and usable property. I suspect some exertions perhaps unavoidable will have to be made to save some. Be apprised that I prefer being with you all in whatever privations you are sub- ject to than in any other situation in life whatever. Please write when you can. I write whenever I can. Direct as usual.
