My dear friends, I suppose you are all aware of the existence of an act of Congress condemning persons who hold correspondence with the Confederates in imprisonment for no shorter time than 6 months nor longer than 5 years and a very heavy fine in addition. I heard of you all only through [memo?] from the time we parted until the last of October, and me anxiety was great. Do you not suppose that if it had been in my power I would have sent you without being hinted to? The total disability that I have had for mending [?] such existence have caused me constant anxiety. I made stringent efforts to get into the Confederate lines last September but without success. It is unnecessary to say that there was but little pleasure to be had in life after the apparition[?] which at that time befell the family. There are others besides myself who simply[?] regretted to a plan has been suggested for the person who suffered at that time, to leave the country, go to one of the Bermudan or Bahaman islands New Providence by name, receive funds which he need have no scruple about using and which it is inferred[?] will be sufficient for his support and [comfort?] in health and strength. This plan is suggested by an [industrial?] well versed (and approved by another common friend) an, and actuated on all cases by the laws of honor and a fastidious judge of honorable and proper conduct. It is supposed that the sufferer is and will be unable to serve[?] in another service that his health and strength will gradually under the present circumstances give way without doing good to any one. This plan is solely based upon the supposed inability to aid any cause under any government. It is my duty to inform the person whom it is hoped to benefit in the best way I can, without making comments or suggestions. If the course is a good and right one that is herein suggested it had better be well thought of. If not there no harm done. The only drawback that I can see is that there may be some chance of the funds in question being taken by rebels on the high seas, privateers and such like. This is my own thought and no other person's. The present month is thought the best to make the trip. Another firm friend thinks it is well to make a trip to Europe or Canada. I hope this is made plain. It is most difficult to write bound up as I am. For the sake of others I must run the risk of being thought a fool. The reception of a certain check was indicated two months before it was received. I do not know the result of the application for cashing it. I will do what I can for you all. This you may rely on.
