December 1862

December 7th

Wind NW Clear & very cold. Ice formed an inch Thick last night & freezing all day. Maria & the children rode to Sister Ann in M.g. I went to Mr Sinclair in mg. the poor old Gentleman is very low. I heard the Burnside attempted to cross the Rappahannock River at Port Royal last Thursday but was foiled by Lee.

Monday 8

Wind NW Early m.g. SW afterwards. Shucked & put away corn Got Wood. A Mr Read a Hampton Refugee here.

Tuesday 9

Wind SW Clear. Shucked & put away Corn. Cut out and salted up the Negroes hogs. A Gun Boat came in the River & sent two Barges up the left prong. I dont know what they did. They went away in Ev.g. Capt Hopkins came from Poquosin River & bought me a Bushel Salt for which he charged $15 & some Tea & Sugar & 3 Bushels Salt for Mr. Sinclair. Capt Davis & three other Poquosin men staid here at night. Two Yankee Deserters from Old Point got here after dark and staid all night. Sent Carter to Mrs. Carney’s after cloth

Wednesday 10

Wind SW Clear Shucking & putting away Corn. Got Wood. Capt Hopkins & Mr Read started for York County about 10 O.clk at night, with Flour he got of Mr Sinclair. Sister Ann & myself Carter returned in Ev.g.

Thursday 11th

Wind SW Clear & warm. Gathering & putting Corn away. The Yankees went up to the Court House To.day in large force “Infantry” “Artillery” “Cavalry” 5 or 6 Thousand men. Where they are going or what they intend doing I dont know. Mr Bryan & Mr Sinclair started about 50 Fifty Hogs each to Richmond but returned & put them in Mr Curtis’s woods.

Friday 12

Wind SW Clear. Gather & Housing Corn. The Yankees took Mr Bryans & Mr Sinclairs hogs except

           and carried them to Gloster point.

a few which got away from them ^ . I hear they are perpetrating all kinds of depredation in & around the Ct House but cant learn particulars as no one is admitted in their lines as they do not push forward but stay at the Ct House this is evidently a simply [Thieving Expediiton,][underlined] Richard got home in Evg from school. He met some Yankees driving hogs but they did not disturb him.

Saturday 13

Wind S Clear Finished gathering Corn & putting it away a very small Crop. 2 Corn houses full & about 25 Bbls in Barn Sister Ann & Martha, Hally Curtis & Mary Jan Griffith dined here A Yankee deserter from Gloster Point staid all night here.

Sunday 14

Wind SW Clear & warm. I went to Mr. Clarke’s & Mr Sinclairs The Yankees took all Mr Kemp’s & Worthey Montague’s Cattle Sheep Hogs &c. and all the [Fouls?] they could find every where.
