January 1862

Tuesday 14 Wind NE Snowed all last night and nearly all day To,day. Hands did nothing but attend to stock Had one Lamb to come, it is alive. The first I have had.

Wednesday 15 Wind W Cloudy & snowed in M.g. Rained a little in Ev.g. Got a few loads of Wood.

Thursday 16 Wind W in m.g. E in Ev.g. Clear. Mauled Rails & cut wood Hauled woods litter to Hog Shelter & repaired the shelters. I have 38 Pigs about a Month old which are Thriving well Sent Polly to Mrs Moore’s in the Wagon. Fanned out Wheat to send to Mill.

Friday 17 Wind N & NE. Clear early cloud cold and damp after 19 O,clock & rained at night. Mauled Rails. Hauled Wood in wagon. Sent Ben with Carriage horse to Mr Hogg’s. wagon to Stubb’s Mill with Wheat. I cant get the Flour for a week. He got from Capahosic 200 Bags. sent by Mr James from Richmond to ship my wheat in.

Saturday 18 Wind SE Drizzled rain nearly all. Hauled wood with Wagon. Mauled Rails. Hauled Woods litter to Farm Pen Maria went to Sister Ann’s in mg. Mr Goggon got there last Evening.


January 1862

Sunday 19th Wind SW Cloudy & drizzled rain. We staid at home. Two Blockading steams are lying in Mobjack Bay at the mouth of the Swash Channel. They have not been there before for several months. A Telegraphic dispatch states that Humphey Marshall with 2500 men defeated 8000 Yankees the other day near Prestonsburg Kentucky

Burnsides Fleet sailed from Hampton ^ out of the Capes day before yesterday. Its destination is not known by us.

Wednesday 22 Wind S Cloudy & Rained in m.g. Mauled Rails Raked & hauled Woods litter. Got Wood
