                                     Fortess Monre April 9th /62

Dear Sister

              This being the first time

that i have ever taken a pen to write

to you and knowing that i ought to

have done so long ago. I hardly know how to commence, but you must forgive me for my neglect and in future i will try to be a little more mindfull of my Sister Hannah. Prephaps you have heard that i am in a different Regiment from what i was when i saw you last then i was in 14th of Brooklyn frinding(?) in the Battle of Bull Run that we had cowardly Set of officers i made up my mind that i would get clear of them if i could. So when i was home i joined the 10th National Souaves(?) Stationed at fort Monroe. It is a much better Regt. and being quartered in barracks all winter it was better than being in camp where we had to sleep eat drink and everything else be it wet or dry. We dont have as many priveliges here we are only allowed out a certain part of the day and then we have nowheres to go. We have a great deal of duty do it takes 150. Men every day f or gaurd So we only have two nights off. I came off this morning and a rough time we had last night it rained in torrents and the wind blew a perfect hurricane. I was on the paraphets(?) exposed to the whole of it as it came off the Sea and you may believe it was not the most enviable position in the world. But we must all make some Sacrifces to the cause in which we have enlisted and Comfort is only one of them. If we were permited to write about the war i could give you some very interesting news of what is going on around us But it is prohibited. I will merely say that they are fighting and you will soon

hear of a battle that will add much
to the prospects of the war. All

I regret is that we are not going to have a hand in, we thought we were at first but the Army has come and gone ad we are here yet with a prospects(?) of remaining. It(?) dont suit a bit we have been pened up so long that we are fairly boiling over with fight and long to have a chance to strike a blow for the good old Stars and Stripes.

The folks in Brooklyn were all well the last i heard from them. The girls have a Secret Society call the C. M.K, i dont know what that means can you guess. You must write as soon as you get this and let me know how you all are up your way.

And i hope soon to be able to give

you a little more exciting new from here. Direct to 6 0/4 ((to) 10th Regt. N.Y. V 8/11 fort Monroe Va

                       care of Capt. Winchester

Write Soon. Give my love to Mr. & Mrs. Seyons and the enquiring friends. I remain Your Affectionate Brother
