John Minson Galt was the son of Samuel Galt, of Londonderry, Ireland, who came to Virginia about 1735, and married Lucy Servant. Galt was born in 1744, was educated at the College of William and Mary about 1762 and studied medicine at Edinburgh and Paris, 1765-1767. He was for a time a surgeon with the Hudson Bay Company, settled in Williamsburg, Virginia, and was vestry man of Bruton Parish Church. In 1774 he was one of the committee of safety for Williamsburg. During the American Revolution he had charge of the sick soldiers in the hospitals in and around Williamsburg. He married Judith Craig, daughter of Alexander Craig and Mary Manpin. Galt died in 1808.

His son was also named John Minson Galt and was the superintendent of Eastern State Hospital.

A Note About The Contents Of This Wiki
The information available in this wiki is the best available from known documents and sources at the time it was written. Unfortunately, many of the early original records of William & Mary were destroyed by fires, military occupation, and the normal effects of time. Information in this wiki is not complete as new information continues to be uncovered in Swem Library's Special Collections Research Center and elsewhere. Researchers are strongly encouraged to use the Special Collections search tools for their research as the information contained in this wiki is by no means comprehensive.
