Department of Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary offers strong programs in undergraduate and graduate studies. Our faculty and focus reach around the world, fostering an interdisciplinary culture, with long-standing links to American Studies Program, Department of History, Music, and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. We offer course work in all four subfields of anthropology and in all the major geographic areas of the world.

Our undergraduate program has always proved attractive to William and Mary students. We graduate about 30 majors every year, and many undergraduates find that a minor in Anthropology is a broadening adjunct to almost any other field of study.

The graduate program which we present is focused on anthropological ways of looking at the past. The Department confers the M.A. and M.A./Ph.D. in Historical Archaeology and the M.A/Ph.D. in Historical Anthropology.

Our advanced studies in historical archaeology and historical anthropology enable a broad spectrum of perspectives onto our past -- an enriching experience for undergraduates and advanced students alike. The Anthropology Department also is partnered with the Institute for Historical Biology, the American Indian Research Center, the Werowocomoco Research Group, and the William and Mary Center for Archaeological Research.

Field and laboratory training in cultural anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology is provided by a variety of courses, as well as through individual research at the senior level. The department sponsors one or more archaeological field schools every summer. Dr. M. Brown conducts summer field research in conjunction with the Colonial Williamsburg Department of Excavation at sites in the Williamsburg area. Additional field schools are occasionally sponsored which focus on prehistoric or Caribbean archaeology.
