Biographical Sketch

Edwin Taliaferro (1835-1867) was born April 15, 1835, the son of Warner Throckmorton Taliaferro (1802-1877) and Leah Seddon Taliaferro (1810-1895). He was the youngest of four children, and brother to Confederate General William Booth Taliaferro. He married Frances Bland Beverley Tucker (1843-1913), they had no issue.[1]

He received a "Master of Arts of the University of Virginia at an early age, he had then spent several years in Europe in study and travel...In 1858, he was made Professor of Latin and the Romance Languages in that venerable institution, William and Mary." [2]

During the American Civil War, he served as an adjutant of the Thirty-second regiment Virginia volunteers (commanded by Colonel Benjamin S. Ewell, the president of William and Mary) and then served on the staff of Major General McLaws and was "finally promoted to the rank of major of artillery...At the end of the war he returned to his post at William and Mary (now laid in ashes,) and there continued his arduous labors, doing double service, until prostrated by disease."[3]

Edwin Taliaferro died at his birthplace of Belleville Plantation in Gloucester County, Virginia on September 1, 1867 at the age of 33.[4]
