5 Hanover St. – New York 29 May 1863

My dear Sir

I have a double motive in addressing you: 1st. to tell you & Mrs. Van Rensselaer that we yesterday received pleasant letters from Ann & Mytton, written at sea up to 14th inst [14 May] & posted on the Persia reaching Queenstown on the 15th.; & 2nd. to lay before you the copy of a letter that my brother received this morning from Dr. Morgan.

Mr. W[illia]m Barnewall received a similar letter this morning which he has shewn Matthew & me as well as his reply (after consult= =ing with Matthew on the subject) in which he informs the Dr. that he must see & confer with the gentleman who cooperated with us in the former occasion, before he can come to a decision.

This, you remember, was the understanding among all those who then united in opposing the removal.

                     us

Mr. Barnewall informs ^ - what we had not been aware of – that there are now two lots of ground composing a part of the site of the Church, now advertised in the papers for sale. [‘now...sale’ underscored] And in his letter to Mr. B[arnewall]_, which is more explicit [underscored] & less of [struck-through] general [underscored] than in the one to Matthew, - the Dr. says plainly that they, the Vestry, are under an absolute necessity of thus disposing of a part [underscored] of the property very soon (which would of course be attended with the immediate pulling down of the building) if they cannot now make arrangements to sell the entire site, including the vaults.

It is the intention of Mr. Barnewall & Matthew to try have a meeting, some day next week, of those who formerly cooperated with us in this matter.

I think we have your vault-deed inside of our tin box at Bank; -and I know that we have a claim upon you – which has never yet been presented – for $13 60/100, which includes the cost of recording the Deed, & your 1/8th part of the $100 paid to Mr. Witmon for defending the case in Court.

Yours Truly Rutson Maury

To Dr. Van Rensselaer Greenbush.
