General
Brig General Taliaferro goes this
morning to Greensboro to confer with you on
the subject of his promotion. His case is a
strong one, but as he will be able to present
it in stronger and better terms than I can, I
will only add that, I know General Taliaferro
well, and that you can place implicit confidence
in whatever statements he may make. I will
further add, that I have never known a more
brave, zealous, and faithful officer, that he wholly
deserves his promotion, and I sincerely hope you
will give it to him.
Very Respectfully,
Y. Ob servant,
W. J. Hardee.

P. S. I have read General Taliaferro's written state-
ment to you, and the facts stated that I organized a
Div for him in Charleston is correct, which Div
he commanded in the fights at Averasboro and Ben-
tonville, the fact of the organization of the Div further
was represented to the War Department at the time
of its organization and his promotion asked for.</html>
